BRATISLAVA - Little Big City

Multicultural City

The outstanding location in the middle of Europe predetermined Bratislava to be the city of crossing the various cultures. Due to the merchant roads or the nearness of Danube River, many passengers had a stop in Bratislava and stayed there some time.

In the course of its long history many nations lived in its territory and each left its indelible mark. It was a home of Celts, Romans, Slavs, Slovaks, Germans, Jew, Hungarians, Croatians and Czech.

It appeared in its various names. In the past Bratislava was called Istropolitana, Pressburg, Pozsony, Prešporok.... Besides the city itself, the various names had also the city districts or streets. Each resident of Bratislava understood all these names.

No wonder. In Bratislava or the ancient Prešpork (Pressburg, Pozsony) the mixed German-Hungarian-Slovak families were no exception. Along with this also developed the language. In one sentence in the old Pressburg language were usually two words in German, two words in Hungarian and 2 words in Slovak. This language was called and is called up to the present day „mishmash“.

The mixture of cultures and nations having influence on Bratislava did not mark only the language, but also customs and cuisine. Like Viennese also the residents of Bratislava like walking in the city. The residents of Bratislava dub such part of the city „Korzo“, and it is leading from Michael‘s tower to Danube river. „Korzo“ is a meeting place for people regardless the age drinking their favorite coffee with favorite Bratislava rolls, apple, and sour cherry-poppy or walnut strudel.

You can find many cities in Europe, but only a few have such unrepeatable atmosphere.
